POLPENAZZE DEL GARDA

The town of Polpenazze del Garda is the main town where vineyards and olive oil are grown. More than 50% of the local wine comes from the vineyards here and grown mainly in the hamlet of Picedo.

The most grown vineyard is Groppello followed by Barbera, Marzemino and San Giovese which are used to produce the young and fruty Chiaretto and the Rosso Riviera. Polpenazze is also  the major olive oil producer. It is possible to buy wine and olive oil directly from the  farmers and also at the local olive oil mill in Polpenazze.

Polpenazze del Garda lies on the hills of Valtenesi but is only 3 Km away from the beaches of Moniga, Manerba and San Felice. It is an ideal place for people looking to relax along with antique traditions. In Polpenazze lots of shows and exhibition take place. The Wine Festival of Polpenazze is well known and important at a national level. This takes place at the end of May and for the last 70 years has been showing the best of wine production. It is considered a showpiece for Lake Garda wine and every year it hosts oenological contests and lectures.

Polpenazze does not only offer quality wine, olive oil and farm products as it has a very organized sports centre with three football fields, tennis and bowl courts and one athletic track. For the last 50 years it has also held one of the most important 6 players championship of the Brescia area and it hosts a very important Night Championship in the months of June and July.

Polpenazze is also a town rich in culture. The castle was built to protect the city from Hungarian invasions, it was then dismantled by the Visconti (family from Milan)  at the beginning of '400, it was rebuilt by Venetians a few years later and eventually completely destroyed in the XVI century. It was replaced by the main Church which is clearly baroque and rich in works of art. Also the Church of S. Pietro in the hamlet of Lucone is of artistic interest because of its frescos, its paintings of  the school from Verona of the mid XIV century and its ancient organ with heavy counter-weights.
