Manerba del Garda
The Fortress
Unfortunately, there are only the ruins of the fortress, built in 110. According to the historic novel written by Ercoliani Leutelmonte was its Lord. After the Valtenesi was taken from Verona by Brescia the fort was destroyed in 1279, for having offered shelter to the Ghibellines within its walls. The definitive destruction of the fortress took place in 1575, following the decree of the  superintendent of Veneto, Giacomo Soranzo, as a band of raiders known as the Zamari had taken refuge inside it.

Parish Church of Santa Maria in Valtenesi
Constructed around 1050, in the village of Pieve Vecchia, it lies on the ruins of a much older church. The parish church of Santa Maria in Valtenesi is the oldest Romanesque monument in the area. There is a nave and two aisles, subdivided by impressive round arches resting on rectangular pillars. One can admire only fragments of the original frescoes, whereas in the presbytery there are frescoes by some artists from Romagna: in the triumphal arch a magnificent “Annunciation” is to be seen, whereas in the dome we find a “Christ” between two angels. The 16th century altarpiece on the high altar, created by Gian Andrea Bertanza from Padenghe and which depicts the “Virgin and Saints Rocco, Sebastiano, Siro and Savino”, is noteworthy. Unfortunately this impressive work was the victim of theft and the destruction of some of its components. The pieces found have been put together in some pictures.

The name would appear to date back to the presence of a temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva, of which only a plaque in her honour remains. It was probably situated where the fortress was constructed.
The area was already inhabited in the prehistoric era, as is demonstrated by many findings, and was also settled by the Romans. Charlemagne issued a diploma in which be gave the Verona monks of San Zeno rights over the areas dominated by the fortress present on the promontory. It is only thanks to this document that it has been possible to trace the existence of the fortress.

Federico Barbarossa  also stayed in Manerba del Garda, giving the Bishop of Verona rights over the town. In 1426 Manerba was part of the Venetian Republic, entering as a part of the Valtenesi area.  With the arrival of the plague in 1630,  the population was decimated, dropping from a figure of 1550 to only 703 at the end of the plague. Nor was Manerba able to escape the terrible raids of the French troops during the war of Spanish succession. Among famous persons from Manerba we find the parish priest Alessandro Gualtieri, who was greatly appreciated in the era of Austrian domination as he opened a completely free grammar school and also concerned himself with agriculture, writing various treatises worthy of note. During the Risorgimento Giuseppe Garibaldi stationed himself at the fortress in Manerba del Garda to study the movements of Austrian troops.
