The Castle
In order to defend against Hungarian raids, in the tenth century the castle was built in Moniga. It is situated opposite the road and has a single entrance gate, at the centre of its eastern side; observing it one can note clear signs of the presence of a drawbridge in the past. There are four characteristic watchtowers at the corners of the walls and three towers at the centre of the walls on the northern, southern and western sides. The keep has been made into a bell tower.
The church of San Martino
The church of San Martino is one of the oldest parish churches in the Valtenesi area. It was built opposite the imposing castle of Moniga. It was consecrated in October 1454 and extended in the second half of the 18th century, Inside one may admire the five altars; the high altar is dedicated to San Martino and the four lesser altars are dedicated to San Giuseppe, San Rosario, the Blessed Virgin Mary and Crucifix of Christ.
Church of the Madonna della neve
This church is also known as the church of San Michele, as it lies in a hamlet which carries the name of this saint. Dating back to the second half of the sixteenth century, it is the most recent of the Romanesque churches in the Valtenesi and has a single nave and gable-roofed façade. The three windows and pronaos probably date back to the 19th century.
Chiaretto, the wine of a night
The famous rosé wine of a light cherry colour, with its special perfume of fruit and flowers and its well-balanced, dry taste, owes its creation to Pompeo Molmetti, who dedicated his attention intensively to the cultivation of vines and wine on his estate. It was in 1896 that this lawyer, teacher of art history, member of parliament and senator gave life to the “Chiaretto”, a wine which brings together the particular characteristics of red and white wine with a harmonious and incomparable taste. Moniga dedicates two events a year to this exceptional wine: in April there is the Chiaretto Prize and in July the Chiaretto Fair.
Cycling in Moniga
Moniga offers the opportunity to follow a pleasant ,flat route through the typical landscape inland, cycling through the olive groves, vineyards and fields. It is known as the “swan” route and starts and finishes in front of the church of the Madonna della Neve, crossing the main road and running alongside the Monte delle Monache, continuing towards Solarolo, whereas on the return trip it goes through the old town centre, close to the impressive castle and the parish church.
